The Commission on Filipinos Overseas’ (CFO) Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD), recently brought together aspiring youth leaders from South Korea and the Philippines for an inspiring cultural exchange. In collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, twenty-five Filipino-South Korean youth participated in this weeklong implementation; designed to deepen their understanding of Filipino heritage and foster connections across both nations.
Arriving in Manila on October 21, the delegation engaged in a variety of activities reflecting the rich Filipino culture. They began at the CFO office in Quezon City, where they were introduced to the basics of the Filipino language through the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and took part in a gender equality workshop led by the Philippine Commission on Women. This experience helped the participants understand the Philippines’ approach to language and inclusivity. Additionally, their visit to Las Piñas National High School offered an opportunity to meet local students and exchange ideas about academic and cultural experiences in both countries.
As part of their immersion into Philippine history and heritage, the group visited key cultural institutions. They explored the National Museum of Fine Arts, where they learned about the evolution of Filipino art, and later met with officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs, where discussions centered on the role of youth in fostering cultural diplomacy. This dialogue was especially meaningful as it underscored the significance of youth-driven initiatives in strengthening Filipino-Korean relations.
A memorable dinner at Barbara’s Heritage Restaurant in Intramuros provided the group with a taste of traditional Filipino cuisine in a historical setting. This gathering marked the end of the Manila segment, after which the group set out for a tour of Ilocos. Although their plans were modified due to Typhoon Kristine, the group maintained their enthusiasm, exploring historic sites like Paoay Church, Ilocos Norte Provincial Capitol, and Calle Crisologo. Their resilience was evident as they embraced last-minute changes, reflecting the adaptability that is central to both Filipino and Korean cultures.
Returning to Manila for the program’s final day, the participants continued their journey through key landmarks such as the National Museum of Natural History and Casa Manila, gaining insights into the country’s colonial heritage. They concluded their visit at the Manila Cathedral, a powerful symbol of Filipino faith and endurance. A spirited farewell dinner at Singing Cooks and Waiters celebrated the connections made throughout the program, featuring Filipino hospitality with music, dance, and culinary delights.
YouLeaD-Korea 2024 represents the CFO’s commitment to fostering global Filipino connections and promoting cross-cultural understanding through youth engagement. As these young leaders return to South Korea, they carry with them an enriched perspective on Filipino culture and a shared mission to act as ambassadors of unity, bridging communities and promoting meaningful collaboration between the Philippines and South Korea.
